Nan rubber growers said they support southern rubber farmers currently protesting in Nakhon Si Thammarat, arguing that the government must step in to tackle low rubber prices as a matter of urgency.
They said the price of rubber should be at least 85 baht per kilogramme, adding that they were ready to join the planned Sept 3 nationwide rally. The government is currently only offering 80 baht per kilogramme.
A rubber farmer’s group in Buriram meanwhile said that at least 2,000 of its members will join the Sept 3 rally in Si Khio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, alongside the Isan Rubber Growers Network.
The group’s co-leader said they expected that more than 30,000 rubber farmers from 20 northeastern provinces would turnout at the Si Khio rally.
The chief of Nakhon Ratchasima police has ordered Si Khio police and nearby district police stations to prepare in the event that Mitrapap road in Si Khio is blocked by rubber farmers.
Police are planning to ask the protesters to refrain from blocking the main highway from the northeast to Bangkok, in the interests of motorists travelling to and from the capital city.
