SINGAPORE (Dow Jones)–Thailand”s natural rubber output in 2009 is likely to fall to a multi-year low between 2.5 million and 2.7 million metric tons, industry and government officials said Tuesday.
They said heavy rains and floods have adversely affected production this month and at least a 12% decline in output is likely on year.
Thailand produced 3.09 million tons of natural rubber in 2008.
It”s too early to give a definitive projection, but one thing certain is that fourth quarter production will be lower than the same period last year, said a senior government official.
Thailand produced 732,000 tons of natural rubber in the October-December 2008 period. It produced 2.15 million tons during January-September 2009.
Rubber industry officials said production may even go below 2.7 million tons.
